The chickenpox vaccine is a two-dose course, spaced at least four weeks apart.

Most children get through chickenpox with a miserable week and some scars. But “usually mild” isn't “always mild” — a small number end up with skin infections, dehydration or worse, adults who catch it get hit far harder than children, and a bout means a week or more off school and off work for whoever's at home. That's why a growing number of parents book the vaccine privately rather than wait for the class outbreak.

Lyng Pharmacy offers the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine at £70 per dose as a two-dose course, at our clinic on Lyng Lane in West Bromwich — an easy trip from Birmingham, Handsworth, Great Barr, Smethwick and across Sandwell, two minutes from M5 junction 1 with free parking.

Who it suits

Children from 12 months, and any adult who's never had chickenpox — which matters more than people realise, because adult chickenpox is significantly nastier and shingles later in life only follows a chickenpox infection. It's particularly worth considering for households where someone is immunosuppressed, for adults working with young children, and for older children who've somehow dodged every outbreak so far.

The course

Two doses, at least four weeks apart, given into the upper arm. Protection after both doses is strong — breakthrough infections still happen occasionally but are typically much milder. It's a live vaccine, so pregnancy and significant immunosuppression rule it out; the pharmacist screens for this before any needle appears.

Timing it around school

There's no wrong season, but the pragmatic window is before nursery or school entry, and definitely before an outbreak letter comes home — the vaccine can still help if given very soon after exposure, but that's a rescue plan, not a strategy. If one child in the house catches it, ask us quickly about protecting siblings who haven't.
