Male Hair Loss: What Actually Works (And What’s Marketing)

By the Lyng Pharmacy team · Clinically reviewed by Jeetender Singh Sahota, Superintendent Pharmacist (GPhC 2048691) · Updated August 2026 · 2 min read

The hair loss industry thrives on desperation — caffeine shampoos, laser combs, supplement stacks. Strip away the marketing and the evidence base for treating male pattern baldness comes down to two medicines: finasteride and minoxidil.

Both are available through the discreet pharmacist-led clinic at Lyng Pharmacy in West Bromwich. Here's the honest picture.

Finasteride: treating the cause

Male pattern hair loss is driven by DHT, a testosterone by-product that miniaturises follicles in genetically susceptible men. Finasteride (1mg daily) blocks the enzyme that makes DHT, cutting scalp levels by around 60%. In long-term studies, roughly 9 in 10 men stopped losing further hair and about two-thirds saw regrowth. It works while you take it; stopping restarts the clock. A small minority experience sexual side effects — your pharmacist discusses this openly before you start.

Minoxidil: stimulating the follicle

Applied to the scalp (solution or foam, once or twice daily), minoxidil extends the hair growth phase and enlarges miniaturised follicles. It works regardless of cause, pairs well with finasteride — the combination outperforms either alone — and its main demands are consistency and patience: allow 3–6 months to judge results, and expect a little extra shedding in the first weeks as follicles reset. That shedding is a sign it's working.

Setting honest expectations

The earlier you start, the more you keep — these medicines are far better at preserving and thickening than resurrecting long-bald scalp. Photos every few months beat mirror-anxiety for tracking progress. And treatment is private and dispensed discreetly: a consultation at our pharmacy, not a subscription trap with an anonymous website.
