Shingles is one of the few conditions where a couple of days' hesitation genuinely changes the outcome. Antiviral treatment works by stopping the virus multiplying — so it delivers the most benefit started within 72 hours of the rash appearing, shortening the illness and cutting the risk of nerve pain that can otherwise last months.
That's why the NHS added shingles to Pharmacy First: adults 18+ can now be assessed and supplied antiviral treatment at Lyng Pharmacy in West Bromwich the same day the rash appears — no GP appointment standing between you and the 72-hour window.
It usually announces itself before it shows itself: tingling, burning or stabbing pain in one area of skin, days before anything is visible. Then comes a red, blotchy rash in a band or patch on one side of the body or face, developing into fluid-filled blisters that eventually crust over. One-sided is the giveaway — chickenpox scatters everywhere; shingles follows a single nerve's territory.
Paracetamol for pain, loose clothing, keep the rash clean and dry, and cool compresses on the blisters — but don't burst them. You can't give anyone shingles, but the blister fluid can give chickenpox to someone who's never had it, so keep the rash covered and stay away from pregnant women, newborns and anyone immunosuppressed until it crusts over.
