Yellow fever is the one travel vaccine you can't quietly skip. For parts of Africa and South America the certificate isn't a recommendation — border officials can ask for it on arrival, and some countries refuse entry without it. Only designated centres can give the vaccine and issue the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), which is why it's often the hardest jab to actually get booked.
Lyng Pharmacy on Lyng Lane in West Bromwich administers the yellow fever vaccine at £65, with the internationally recognised certificate issued in the same appointment. We're two minutes from junction 1 of the M5 with free parking outside, which makes us a straightforward option if you're coming from Birmingham, Handsworth, Smethwick, Oldbury, Dudley or anywhere across the Black Country.
Since 2016 the certificate has been valid for the holder's lifetime — the old ten-year rule is gone. One dose, one certificate, done. It needs to be given at least ten days before you enter a risk country, because that's how long the certificate takes to become valid, so don't leave it to the week before you fly.
Travellers to large parts of sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America — think Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Brazil's interior, Peru's jungle regions. Some countries also demand the certificate from anyone arriving via a yellow fever country, even on a connection. Our pharmacist checks your exact itinerary against the current country requirements during the appointment, because transit rules catch people out more than anything else.
It's a live vaccine, so it isn't suitable for everyone — pregnancy, immunosuppression, some thymus conditions and babies under nine months all need individual assessment, and travellers over 60 having it for the first time get a careful risk discussion. Where the vaccine isn't appropriate but the destination demands a certificate, a medical exemption letter can sometimes be issued instead; we'll talk through your situation honestly rather than jab first and think later.
