Apixaban is one of the newer anticoagulants that have largely replaced warfarin for many people. No INR tests, no yellow book, far fewer food interactions — but a much shorter duration of action, which means a missed dose leaves you less protected far sooner.
Reducing stroke risk in atrial fibrillation, and treating and preventing deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. It is also used after hip and knee replacement surgery.
It is not suitable for people with mechanical heart valves — warfarin remains the medicine for those.
Usually twice daily, at the same times each day, with or without food. Swallow whole with water.
Taking it consistently matters more than with warfarin. Apixaban wears off within hours rather than days, so missing doses leaves you unprotected quickly. Use a pill box, an alarm, or ask us about compliance aids if you find it hard to remember.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember on the same day and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take a double dose.
You will still need periodic blood tests to check kidney function, and the dose depends partly on kidney function, age and weight.

Check with us before taking anything new, including over-the-counter medicines and herbal remedies. Ibuprofen, aspirin, St John’s wort, some antifungals and some HIV medicines all matter here.
Apixaban is not used in pregnancy — speak to your GP if you are pregnant or planning to be.
