Nigeria is one of the destinations where getting your vaccines sorted is not just sensible, it is a condition of entry. A yellow fever certificate is required for all travellers, and border officials do check. Without it you can be refused entry, vaccinated at the airport, or quarantined — none of which is how you want to start a trip.
Lyng Pharmacy in West Bromwich administers yellow fever and issues the internationally recognised certificate (ICVP) in the same appointment, two minutes from junction 1 of the M5 with parking outside.
Yellow fever (£65, certificate included) — a single dose, valid for life under the current international rules. It must be given at least ten days before you arrive, because that is when the certificate becomes valid. This is the one to book first.
Hepatitis A (£65, child £55) and typhoid (£35) — food and water borne, advised for essentially all travellers.
Tetanus, diphtheria and polio booster (£35) — check your last dose.
Malaria tablets (from £30) — malaria is present throughout Nigeria all year round, including in Lagos and Abuja. This is not a marginal call: tablets are advised for every trip, alongside bite avoidance. Options include doxycycline (£30), atovaquone/proguanil (£36) and Malarone (£40).
Meningitis ACWY (£45) — Nigeria sits in the African meningitis belt, and the vaccine is advised particularly for travel in the dry season between December and June, for longer stays, and for anyone in close contact with the local population.
Rabies (£60 per dose) and hepatitis B (£55 per dose) — both worth considering for longer stays, rural work and anyone likely to need medical treatment.
Cholera (£40) — mainly for aid workers, those in areas with poor sanitation, or during a known outbreak.
Yellow fever alone needs ten days before arrival. Rabies needs three doses across three to four weeks. Six weeks gives you room for everything without rushing. Booking a free consultation early costs nothing and tells you exactly what your trip needs.
