Travel Vaccines for Turkey: Holidays, and the Bit Nobody Mentions About Medical Trips

By the Lyng Pharmacy team · Clinically reviewed by Jeetender Singh Sahota, Superintendent Pharmacist (GPhC 2048691) · Updated August 2026 · 4 min read
A coastal town on the Turkish coast
Turkey. Straightforward for a beach holiday — a different conversation for medical travel.

For a fortnight in Antalya, Bodrum or Istanbul, Turkey is one of the easier destinations. No vaccines are required for entry and there is no malaria risk in the tourist areas. Routine UK vaccinations usually cover you.

Worth checking for any trip

Tetanus, diphtheria and polio (£35) — the booster most adults have let lapse. Ten-year cover, quick to sort.

Hepatitis A (£65, child £55) — reasonable if you are eating outside hotels, travelling in rural or eastern regions, or staying with family.

If you are travelling for medical or cosmetic treatment

This deserves more attention than it gets. Turkey is now one of the biggest destinations for hair transplants, dental work, cosmetic surgery and bariatric procedures, and a large share of that travel starts in the West Midlands. Any procedure that breaks the skin carries a bloodborne virus risk, and standards vary enormously between clinics.

Hepatitis B (£55 per dose, child £40) is worth having before you go. The full course is three doses, and there are accelerated schedules if you are travelling sooner than the standard timetable allows — come and talk to us as early as you can.

Beyond vaccines: check your clinic's credentials, be clear what aftercare is included, take a full list of your regular medicines, and think about who will look after you when you get home. Complications from procedures abroad usually land on the NHS, and having your GP in the loop before you travel makes that far less messy.

Rural and eastern Turkey

Away from the coastal resorts, typhoid (£35) becomes more reasonable, and rabies (£60 per dose) is worth discussing for longer stays or rural travel where medical care is further away.

The practical stuff

Sun and heat cause more spoiled holidays than infections. Take a sensible first-aid kit, keep on top of hydration, and be careful with food from stalls in high summer. If you take regular medication, carry enough for the trip plus a few days, in original packaging.
