Phenoxymethylpenicillin — penicillin V — is the classic antibiotic for streptococcal throat infections. At Lyng Pharmacy it can be supplied under Pharmacy First where a sore throat assessment indicates antibiotics are appropriate.

What it is used for

Bacterial sore throat and tonsillitis, some ear and skin infections, dental infections, and long-term prevention of infection in certain conditions.

Most sore throats are viral and need no antibiotic. The FeverPAIN score we use in the consultation room is what decides whether treatment is appropriate.

How to take it

Take it on an empty stomach — at least 30 minutes before food or two hours after. Food substantially reduces absorption.

Usually four times a day, spaced as evenly as practical through the day. Finish the whole course even once you feel better.

Liquid should be shaken well, measured with the syringe or spoon provided, and usually stored in the fridge — check the label.

Side effects and allergy

Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach upset and thrush are the common ones.

Get urgent help for swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing — call 999. Also seek advice for a widespread itchy rash, blistering skin, or severe or bloody diarrhoea.

A genuine penicillin allergy means hives, swelling or breathing difficulty, usually within an hour of a dose. Nausea or diarrhoea are side effects rather than allergy — and if you carry a penicillin allergy label you are unsure about, it is worth asking your GP to review it.

It can be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding where indicated.

Always read the label. This page is general information, not advice for your situation. Doses, warnings and interactions differ between products and between people. Check the leaflet inside your medicine, and ask our pharmacist if anything is unclear — that conversation is free and takes two minutes.
