Every spring the same scene plays out at our counter on Lyng Lane: someone who's been suffering for a fortnight, working through whichever antihistamine the supermarket had, wondering why it isn't touching their blocked nose. The honest answer is that hay fever treatment works brilliantly — when the treatment matches the symptom. Most people are just holding the wrong tool.
Antihistamine tablets — cetirizine and loratadine are the workhorses — are best for sneezing, itching and runny noses, and one non-drowsy tablet a day covers most people. What tablets do poorly is congestion: a genuinely blocked nose responds far better to a steroid nasal spray, which calms the inflammation itself. Itchy, streaming eyes that survive the tablet do best with antihistamine eye drops on top. Severe sufferers often need the tablet and the spray together — that's not overkill, it's the standard approach.
Steroid nasal sprays take days to build up to full effect and work best used every day through the season, not fired like a rescue inhaler on bad mornings. Starting the spray a week or two before your usual symptoms begin — most people know their month — beats anything you can do mid-flare. Technique matters too: aim slightly outward, away from the middle wall of the nose, or you'll trade congestion for nosebleeds.
Hay fever is covered by our free NHS minor illness service, so if you're in West Bromwich or anywhere in Sandwell, a conversation with our pharmacist costs nothing and can include treatment where appropriate — worth knowing before buying a basketful. Come and see us rather than self-managing if one side of your nose is blocked constantly, symptoms are dragging on outside pollen season, or you're wheezing — hay fever and asthma travel together, and a flare in one often means a flare in the other.
You can also order the standing favourites — antihistamine tablets, children’s syrups, eye drops — from our online shop with free delivery across West Bromwich on orders over £15.
