Pharmacy First in West Bromwich: Free NHS Treatment Without a GP Appointment

By the Lyng Pharmacy team · Clinically reviewed by Jeetender Singh Sahota, Superintendent Pharmacist (GPhC 2048691) · Updated August 2026 · 2 min read

The 8am phone scramble for a GP appointment isn't the only route to NHS treatment anymore. Under Pharmacy First, pharmacists can assess and treat seven common conditions on the NHS — including supplying antibiotics where clinically appropriate — with no appointment and no charge for the consultation.

Lyng Pharmacy on Lyng Lane, West Bromwich offers the full service. Walk in, or use our one-minute online eligibility checker and we'll call you.

The seven Pharmacy First conditions

Sore throat (age 5+), sinusitis (12+), earache/middle-ear infection (ages 1–17), infected insect bites (1+), impetigo (1+), shingles (18+), and uncomplicated UTIs in women aged 16–64. Each has its own NHS clinical pathway — your pharmacist works through it with you, examines where needed (we use an otoscope for ears, and FeverPAIN scoring for throats), and supplies treatment on the spot when the assessment supports it.

What it costs

The consultation is free for everyone. If medicine is supplied, normal NHS prescription rules apply — free if you're exempt (children, over-60s, and other exemption groups), or the standard prescription charge if you normally pay. Private alternatives are available where you fall outside an NHS pathway.

Beyond the seven: our minor illness service

Coughs and colds, hayfever, conjunctivitis, head lice, threadworm, athlete's foot, mouth ulcers, teething, nappy rash, constipation, diarrhoea, eczema — our pharmacists assess and advise on all of them daily, and we have dedicated guides for each on our conditions pages. If something needs a GP, we'll say so and help you get there faster.
